About this event

Join Maggie Rowe, LICSW, CCLS, and Krista Reeder, CCLS, MT-BC for an educational program on children's grief narratives, co-sponsored by Life's Learning and Lion's Heart Grief Center. When a significant person in a child's life dies, the story the child internalizes can significantly impact whether their grief experience is healthy or complicated. If you work with children and often find it challenging to discuss death and grief, and wish to guide them towards healthy healing, this session is designed for you. It will explore children's comprehension of death at different developmental stages and offer strategies for open and supportive communication on difficult topics such as suicide, overdose, homicide, cancer, and more. Earn 3 CEUs approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to develop their clinical skills in difficult conversations with children & caregivers around death, mourning, and grief.

Participants will be able to identify what children of various ages need for healthy mourning and grief experiences.

Participants will be able to distinguish between grief, complicated grief, and traumatic grief, and how therapeutic approaches differ.

Participants will have a solid understanding of a grief narrative and the importance of the story of loss they are carrying.

Participants will be able to conceptualize healthy children's grief experiences, and name local resources for grieving children in the Spokane area.
