CULTURE NEWS

  • A new bronze horse sculpture by Montana artist Deborah Butterfield — Ancient Child — donated by Jim Knox will be unveiled at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and will join its permanent collection.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Tracy Simmons, a longtime religion reporter and WSU scholarly assistant professor, explains her choice to be called LuLu instead of Mom as she shapes an authentic parenting identity for her son Stanley. Her piece shows how reclaiming a childhood nickname redefines family roles.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Coliseum opened in December 1954 when Metropolitan Opera soprano Patrice Munsel and the Spokane Philharmonic performed after years of debate over a civic auditorium. Known as the Boone Street Barn, the venue hosted concerts, sports and events until it was replaced in 1995.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Latinos en Spokane launched its bilingual driving school, Rutas Seguras Driving Academy (Safe Routes Driving Academy), early December near its office to offer lower-cost driver’s education and advise Spanish speakers on their rights during traffic stops.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A local registered nurse writes that light rail transit is needed to ease growing congestion and improve public health along North Spokane Corridor and South Valley rail right-of-way. She notes that a $2 employer tax + federal grants offer a realistic funding path for transit improvements before traffic worsens.  The Spokesman-Review

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Andrew and Liz Tye, who opened Brew Peddler in September 2024, continue to serve custom-roasted coffee and house-made café fare at the cozy shop next to Ross Dress for Less in the Manito Shopping Center. They use local ingredients and showcase local art to create a family-friendly space.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • In a game Sunday night, No. 7 Gonzaga overcame an early deficit to secure an 82—47 win over Loyola Marymount. Bench players added 53 points as Gonzaga moved to 16—1 and maintained its West Coast Conference unbeaten streak.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga’s women’s basketball team ended its five-game win streak on Sunday when it lost 77-73 to Santa Clara at the Leavey Center, as turnovers and foul trouble hampered its comeback efforts.  The Spokesman-Review
  • WSU's Cougars beat Oregon State 81-67 on Sunday after guard Jerone Morton hit a fadeaway jumper that beat the shot clock. The win marked the team's fifth in six games as they adjust with guards Tomas Thrastarson and Kase Wynott sidelined with injuries.  The Spokesman-Review
