  • Riverfront Park’s coin souvenir presses have long offered visitors unique penny designs, but with U.S. pennies ending this November, Bullseye Amusements in Spokane may switch to quarter presses at sites like Market Street Pizza — a change that could alter a cherished local memento.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic train depot in Spokane will soon reopen as a community space after careful restoration. Local officials say the upgraded facility will host art & community events that honor its heritage.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Eastern Washington banks and businesses report that despite the halt in penny production, cash transactions remain unchanged today with ample coins available. Some shops have begun rounding up to the nearest nickel while others plan to adjust as coins run scarce.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools moved Adams Elementary students to Camp Adams — housed in the old Jefferson Elementary building — where superintendent Swinyard praised a smooth start; the district will demolish the old Adams building this month so new construction can begin in March.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA-funded $19.9 million award for climate resilience was rescinded in May, delaying solar array, HVAC upgrades and resilience hub plans + local leaders from the city and Gonzaga are pressing on with updated strategies to protect Spokane from extreme weather.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane’s annual Point in Time Count is set for the end of January to survey the homeless population across Spokane County. City officials say trained volunteers will help count participants, even though the method might miss some individuals, because the effort is key to securing federal funding for resources.  KHQ

  • Tuesday's Greater Spokane League games saw Mead boys defeat Ridgeline 71-66 behind Karson Maze’s 21 points while Gonzaga Prep girls remained undefeated with a 66-36 win over Ferris. Multiple teams posted standout performances in this local high school basketball roundup.  The Spokesman-Review
