- ➤ On New Year’s Eve, Spokane firefighters rescued an injured dog from a 15-foot embankment near Howard Street Bridge. They lowered a firefighter (using a harness system) to secure the pet, and after 40 minutes the dog was reunited with its owner. KHQ

- ➤ Romance author Jessica James will speak with Bethany Bennett on Jan. 16 at Auntie’s Bookstore to promote her latest Glitter Bats book—which features a friends-to-lovers romance drawing on her lifelong passion for music. The Spokesman-Review

- ➤ On Jan. 2, photographer Nancy Taylor-Babcock captured a rare sight of a great grey owl perched on a ponderosa pine in Spokane County while it hunted for voles. Experts say the bird likely left its highland range after icy conditions hampered its food supply and may reappear soon. The Spokesman-Review
