COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Spokane community members join a peaceful Women’s Walk Out as part of a national movement by leaving work at 2:00 p.m. to gather from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at Representative Michael Baumgartner’s office on 528 E Spokane Falls Blvd and organizers will provide signs as needed.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study finds that families must earn over $400k annually to cover child care costs, spotlighting tough economic conditions for local households. The report may prompt discussions on measures to ease care expenses — a pressing issue for our community.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers approved a funding bill that allocates $3M for research grants; WSU will receive $2M for its semiconductor crystal program and Gonzaga will get $1M to boost local materials research in the aerospace tech hub.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane legislators discussed a bill in committee Tuesday to extend the compliance period for the Waste to Energy Facility, which may reduce an $8 million tax burden from carbon dioxide emissions. The extension will allow more time for carbon capture, recycling and metal sorting before the 2027 deadline.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • After a rescue post on Nextdoor, Dr. Robert Clark of Critters Care—who puts animals first—stepped in to save Honey, a pregnant dachshund needing an emergency C-section when her family couldn’t pay the fee. Honey is recovering as her family has launched a fundraiser to help cover costs.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Airway Heights opened part of its new Public Safety Building for the Airway Heights Wrestling Club, which now hosts twice-weekly practices for over 100 children ages 5 to 14. Pastor Jacob Powers said the facility serves as a temporary space until remodeling begins.  KHQ
  • Gonzaga’s coaching staff adjusted their lineup today at McCarthey Athletic Center as Braden Huff injured his knee and Graham Ike suffered ankle swelling (both sidelined). The team introduced a debut starter and a five-guard formation for the 6 p.m. match against Pepperdine.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Eastern Washington football entered the transfer portal window with seven starters leaving but kept key players as coaches plan to add new talent by National Signing Day on Feb. 4 — the moves are intended to strengthen the squad for spring practices.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Former Spokane Indians standout Carlos Beltrán (1996) was elected Tuesday to the National Baseball Hall of Fame despite his role in the Astros sign-stealing scandal. He is one of four switch hitters to reach 1,500 runs and 1,500 RBI and will be inducted with the 2026 Class this summer.  The Spokesman-Review
