COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SpokAnimal has resumed dog adoptions today after a respiratory illness affected its canine community — the shelter is limiting appointments to five a day to prioritize pet health.  KHQ
  • Local clergy returned to Spokane today after a trip to Minnesota to support emotional healing from recent violence. Dr. Jer Swigart said he saw diverse community members unite as local healthcare workers plan a peaceful march later this week from Riverfront Park to the county courthouse.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Water scientist Jennifer Adam from Washington State University explained that as temperatures rise, mountain snow melts and soaks into soil before feeding streams and powering crops (a process critical to managing water supply as warmer weather reduces winter snowfall). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane saw an 11% drop in homelessness numbers from 2024 to 2025 after efforts increased permanent housing placements, as explained at a recent City Council finance meeting. HEALTH NEWS

  • Vitalant has seen an 800-unit drop in blood donations this winter due to weather and illness. The blood bank is hosting drives starting Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Deer Park and at other local sites to keep hospitals supplied.  KXLY

  • Financial experts advise prospective home buyers in Spokane that improved 2026 market conditions could ease the past seller-favored trend—Jon Maroni of Numerica Credit Union recommends strengthening finances and exploring assumable mortgages as winter may bring fewer competitors.  KXLY
  • The Spokane Housing Authority secured $7.48M from the state commerce office for Chalice Place, an 85-unit affordable housing project for seniors and individuals with disabilities at North Wall and Country Homes Boulevard. Construction will begin in fall 2026 and finish by spring 2028.  KHQ

  • Sergey Avdyushkin won his fourth straight Langlauf 10K cross-country ski race on Sunday at Mount Spokane State Park — he finished in 29:24 on a fast course with over 180 competitors, while former Olympian Rebecca Dussault was the top female finisher at 33:43.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Gonzaga men's basketball team jumped two spots in the AP poll to #6 after wins against Pepperdine and USF. They will host St. Mary's on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.  KXLY
