COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Loon Lake Elementary School this morning, about 100 people celebrated Marine Corps veteran Joshua Elliot as he was set to receive a free adaptive home from Homes for Our Troops (a nonprofit that builds homes beyond ADA requirements). His new home is expected to be finished by the end of spring.  KXLY
  • After 35 years serving families and rescuing animals, Cat Tales Wildlife Center in Mead is forming a community committee to decide whether to relocate or improve its current site because highway noise and limited space are creating challenges + community input will help shape its future.  KXLY
  • Spokane native Larry Gorton, a Rogers High alum and WSU grad, has run Bloomsday every year since he took up jogging in college, overcoming challenges related to his profound deafness and past health events — he now sees the race as both fun and a vital part of his life.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire Department completed wildfire fuel reduction on 200 acres of South Hill bluff as part of work on 1,700 acres funded by a $1.5 million federal grant + $375,000 in local funds to lessen risk and boost forest health.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Painted turtles stay underwater in local ponds during winter, drawing oxygen through cloacal respiration for up to five months. In spring, they will emerge to bask and begin their mating season.  The Spokesman-Review

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A downtown apartment building at 225 S. Wall St. will undergo $1.2 million in renovations by tech executive Jonathan McKay’s firm M5x2 Capital — the project will fix code issues while keeping the existing unit layouts as it is renamed The Oxford.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northern Colorado's women's basketball team defeated Eastern Washington 71+62 on Saturday at Reese Court after a late run gave them the edge. Freshman guard Elyn Bowers matched her career high with 26 points as EWU's rally lost steam in the final minutes.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Whitworth bounced back from its first Northwest Conference loss and won 93-85 over Willamette on Saturday at Cone Field House. Stephen Behil scored 24 points with eight rebounds while Caden Bateman added 21 in the second half.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga Prep wrestlers won the 4A dual championship at Rogers High School on Saturday by beating Mead 46-21 — freshman Austin Schield made a key pin. Cheney girls wrestling finished fourth in Kelso, North Central beat Deer Park in boys basketball, and Deer Park triumphed in the girls game.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Clarkston native Joel Dahmen shot a 4-under 68 Saturday and stands alone in second at 15-under after three rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines near San Diego, six strokes behind leader Justin Rose. The 38-year-old is eyeing another top-10 finish.  The Spokesman-Review
