  • At Loon Lake, Wash., Stevens County District One crews, Fish and Wildlife officers and local residents rescued a deer that drew international attention — spurring a local t-shirt company to create commemorative apparel with profits aiding the fire district in purchasing new equipment.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Securing $2M in grant funding, a new multi-use facility in northeast Spokane will add 100 childcare slots and affordable housing near Wellesley in Hillyard today. The project will break ground this year and finish by 2028 to support working families.  KXLY
  • Whitworth University has announced a partnership with Spokane Public Schools that guarantees local students admission and scholarships – a move aimed at expanding their access to higher education.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane will build 27 miles of bike lanes by the end of 2027—construction starts next year—to improve safety and slow traffic. City officials are testing various designs and welcome community feedback.  KXLY
  • City leaders in Spokane Valley reviewed last year’s Homeless Outreach Program data Tuesday night and found the team contacted 323 people each quarter, placed 50 in permanent housing and 43 in shelters, and visited 779 camps while noting challenges like limited shelter beds—regional partners provide warming shelter services.  KHQ

  • Medical Lake teen Owen Pitts passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer, his boys basketball team announced on social media.
