COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army reopened its remodeled Hope Market food pantry on Wednesday in Spokane, doubling its shopping space with a new waiting room, grocery carts and backstock doors styled like a grocery store. Funded with a nearly $500K city grant, the pantry now serves about 100 households weekly at 204 E. Indiana Ave.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Senator Maria Cantwell announced a $2 million federal grant to fund an affordable childcare facility in Hillyard, easing rising costs and long waitlists that burden local families + some residents reported paying about $28,000 yearly for two kids.  KHQ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Downtown Spokane experienced a 5.4% increase in foot traffic by the end of 2025; the Downtown Spokane Partnership reported more than 3 million tourists visited the area in the fourth quarter (agency data).  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Transit Authority tested its double-decker buses Wednesday with new safety measures following a January crash that removed the fleet from routes. Drivers will go through extra training and safety stops, and officials plan to have six buses operating by late February — passengers still cannot board.  KXLY
  • SB 5272, the school safety bill, is close to approval in the House and will be heard this Thursday. The bill would expand protections for staff and students and impose tougher penalties for violent acts at schools.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eastern Washington's football team is set to fill three coaching spots after coaches Eric Sanders, Jaylen Johnson, and Wes Nurse left to join Montana — taking on roles similar to those they held with the Eagles. Eastern has not yet named their replacements while Zach Bruce and Caleb Padilla remain on the staff.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga basketball player Jaiden Haile shared his training routines and season outlook in a full interview on KXLY+, offering fresh insights for local fans as the season unfolds.  KXLY
  • At Wednesday's WHL Prospects Game in Langley, B.C., Spokane Chiefs forward Tyus Sparks scored twice as West stars lost 5-4 to the East. The team will resume play Friday against Vancouver at the Arena at 7:05 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A late snowfall in Spokane set a cozy scene as locals followed Mariners spring training news, with the team emerging as the odds-on favorite for an American League berth.
