COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is offering discounted dog adoptions today from noon to 4 p.m. at its facility on E. Trent Avenue in Spokane Valley, with 19 adult dogs available for adoption ($60 includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping and a one-year license). BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spokane International Airport finished 2025 with a record 4.35 million passengers + a 2% increase, launching seasonal nonstop flights to Houston, Anchorage and year-round service to Orange County. The airport also added a new restaurant and is nearing completion of its Terminal Renovation expansion this summer.  KHQ

  • A local childcare facility owner explained how rising childcare costs have impacted Spokane families amid continuing affordability concerns in the Inland Northwest, and the NonStop Local report noted that many parents now face financial challenges.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Transit Authority is finalizing its investigation into the January crash when a double-decker bus hit a viaduct and injured seven passengers. The repaired bus will soon return to service.  KHQ
  • Spokane County received $3 million from Congress directed by Senator Patty Murray to expand its sobering and recovery center. The funding will increase beds and enhance crisis care for those transitioning into treatment, officials said.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane Allergy and Asthma Clinic announced on Wednesday that it has closed indefinitely—Google Maps now shows it as permanently closed, and patients will soon receive letters with instructions on retrieving records and medications.  KHQ
  • State data revealed 57 critical child welfare incidents last year, including 22 child deaths and 35 near misses mainly linked to opioids. Local groups like Maddie's Place — treating newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome — and Vanessa Behan are struggling to support vulnerable children.  KXLY

  • Former NHL player Derek Ryan will have his No. 10 jersey retired Saturday night during a pregame ceremony at Eagles Ice Arena as the Braves honor his career. The coach & Spokane native has returned home with his family and now leads his son's team.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Senior Caroline Spink scored eight key points in the fourth quarter as Mead edged Lewis and Clark 39-35 on Thursday. The Panthers, missing key players, now advance to the district third-place game on Saturday.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga climbed to No. 5 in the NCAA NET rankings after beating USF 80-59 on Wednesday at the Chase Center. Coach Mark Few praised point guard Mario Saint-Supery (playing 33 minutes in his first start since December) for his strong performance amid the team’s push to secure the WCC title.  The Spokesman-Review
