ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane firefighters rescued a cat from a house fire on W. Jackson Ave near N. Adams St in the Emerson Garfield neighborhood Thursday (no one was home) and residents face displacement as the cause is under investigation.  KXLY

  • Spokane business owners share mixed views on planned changes to Grand Boulevard, where lanes will be reduced and widened; Igor Yorke, whose Sweet Tooth opened in Oct. 2025, worries construction might deter customers (while Logan Sevier of South Hill Little Euro supports improved road safety).  KHQ

  • Spokane Valley local Josh Williams celebrated his appearance on Wheel of Fortune — he went through multiple auditions — which aired Feb. 26 in California where he met co-host Vanna White. He attended the filming with his fiancée and family.  KHQ

  • Parker Ritzmann (22), a former Hutton Settlement student who launched HOPE Neighborhood Roasters in Spokane, has been selected as one of 150 Schwartzman Scholars from over 5,800 applicants and will study global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane County recorded 344 overdose deaths in 2025—a slight decrease from 346 reported the previous year. Methamphetamine was the leading drug involved, followed by fentanyl, and most cases involved multiple substances.  KHQ

  • Maris Vavers, a poultry trader from Latvia, has driven across the West Coast to catch his son Rihards' WSU basketball games — a sign of their special bond while he manages a tough work schedule. He watched his son play in Pullman and Los Angeles before returning to his remote duties.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Tee times are now available for The Creek at Qualchan and Esmeralda golf courses, which will open Monday, March 2 as the first city courses of the season. Both courses will offer permanent greens, carts allowed, open driving ranges, and on-site restaurant options (ideal for players of all skill levels).  City of Spokane
  • Ferris High School’s junior varsity cheer squad won the national championship on Saturday after clinching the state title and competing in California against top teams — impressing judges with their stunts and routines as they returned home to Spokane.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Bloomsday will mark its 50th race on May 3, celebrating nearly 50 years of local tradition. Exhibits at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture and Terrain Gallery (opening April 3) and a repeat-run meet at No-Li Brewery on March 31 accompany open registration, ending April 1 as prices rise.  KXLY
