COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Western Washington marks 25 years since the 6.8 quake that injured nearly 400 people and led to major infrastructure upgrades (including ShakeAlert). Spokane residents recalled feeling the tremors, with one witness sharing that her daughter asked if she sensed the quake.  KHQ
  • The City of Spokane Water Department & Spokane Public Library will host free eight‑week Water Wise Workshops at Shadle Park Library beginning March 4 to offer tools for water efficient gardens and sustainable landscaping, with sessions running every Wednesday until April 22 and no registration required.  City of Spokane
  • Spokane firefighters rescued Rusty — a dog stuck between two buildings — today after receiving a call from a nearby resident, and the team safely freed him from the narrow space.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burger King President Tom Curtis — appointed in Oct. 2021 — is fielding thousands of customer calls about the chain’s upgrades to the Whopper, which now features a new mayo, updated bun, and box packaging; he said with Lent coming, fish sandwich production will double soon.  KHQ

FINANCE NEWS

  • Spokane lottery officials say a winning $1.2 million ticket was sold Thursday night at the Fred Meyer store — 12120 N. Division St. Buyers have 180 days to claim their prize as the retailer earns a $12,350 bonus.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House budget proposal would cut funding for the DNR Urban and Community Forestry program, risking staff losses and federal grant matching that supports urban tree projects (including in Spokane neighborhoods). The Senate plan retains funding, leaving the decision in limbo.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Local officials are renovating a building (in downtown Spokane) to offer dedicated veteran services, with work expected to complete soon.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf will open three county-owned courses soon, with Liberty Lake and MeadowWood opening on March 11 and Latah Creek on March 20 (its driving range opens March 13). Planned improvements include updated driving ranges and a new maintenance facility by June.  The Spokesman-Review
  • At Cheney HS on Friday, Cle Elum-Roslyn beat Reardan 67-56 with Nellie Nicholls scoring 32 points as the team advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals; King's won 61-38 over Lakeside at North Creek HS and Muckleshoot Tribal beat Garfield-Palouse 57-46 at Auburn HS, with upcoming games set for Wednesday and Thursday.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Whitworth's men's basketball team beat Lewis & Clark 76-60 on Friday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse, avenging a loss from last season while advancing to the NWC championship game. Ben Nyquist led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds, as Coach Jablonski praised the seniors for rising to the challenge.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Friday night, Colfax Bulldogs honored late coach Reece Jenkin — his photo on the bench set a heartfelt tone — as his son Adrik scored 34 points, including a milestone bucket for 2,000 career points, to lead a 96-49 win at West Valley High School; his sister Allie scored a career-high 41 points.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s will face off Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at UCU Pavilion as point guards Mario Saint-Supery and Joshua Dent aim to lead the final regular-season game.
