CULTURE NEWS

  • The Coeur d’Alene Tribe argued in 1976 that the state should forfeit land after a ruling on Heyburn State Park violated a 1911 agreement — a long battle over land use — while the Campbell House prepared to open as the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture on Apr. 16.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EWU students from Cheney visited Olympia for the first time since 2019 to urge lawmakers to maintain funding for public colleges under the Washington College Grant. They warned that a proposal to include private schools could reduce support for institutions like EWU.  KHQ
  • Fire crews from Spokane Valley and Pasco joined Read Across America Week to read to children at Riverbend and Columbia River Elementary Schools and share safety tips—offering fun sound effects and character voices to inspire young readers and future firefighters.  KHQ
  • Eastern Washington University announced plans to build a new dorm (expected to boost student housing) at its main campus, with construction set to begin soon to support growing enrollment.  KXLY
  • Washington State University opened the Logan Family Clinic at Logan Elementary on Feb. 26 to offer primary care Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and shifted 28 nursing students from Yakima to Spokane and Tri-Cities campuses to address budget challenges after 50 years of Yakima nursing.  Inlander

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County’s 200 volunteers assist the sheriff’s department by handling handicap enforcement, latent print gathering and early morning traffic control; this effort lets deputies focus on crucial duties and saves over $1 million. The initiative continues to boost department efficiency.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eastern Washington women will open the Big Sky Tournament at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Idaho Central Arena against Northern Colorado (after an 81-61 win over Northern Arizona). Coach Joddie Gleason said the team must play its best to advance as the No. 6 seed.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Colfax boys basketball advanced to the 2B semifinals with a 76-61 win over Freeman at Spokane Arena; the undefeated Bulldogs (25-0) will face No. 3 Okanogan today at 7:15 p.m. following an emotional week after late coach Reece Jenkin’s passing.  The Spokesman-Review
