COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane’s Office of Neighborhood Services introduced two programs on March 2 to improve neighborhood safety and cleanliness—Disposal Passes for up to a $30 facility tipping fee and a free solar motion-detecting light for homes—and invites residents to report traffic concerns via the Safe Streets survey until March 31.  City of Spokane

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Spokane Transit Authority bus in Cheney went off the road Friday just before noon after the driver missed a turn, leaving the bus high-centered near the 14000 block of West Salnave Road (no injuries were reported) as the agency continues to investigate.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Train Dreams is an art project inspired by the 2023 Medical Lake fires that burned hundreds of homes and left a layer of grey ash in the area. The work highlights the local impact of The Gray and Oregon Road blazes on the community.  KHQ
  • SPIFF is showcasing over 40 films at a local art event in Spokane. The event will offer film lovers a diverse selection of works to enjoy and inspire creativity.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools celebrates National School Breakfast Week by showcasing its free breakfast program that now serves 12,000 students daily. The district begins menu planning over a year earlier (with kitchen staff testing recipes and training) to meet growing participation.  KXLY

  • A Voodoo Lily that smells like rotting flesh has bloomed at the Gaiser Conservatory in Manito Park, and the unusual flower is designed to attract flies and beetles while only lasting a couple of days for visitors to experience.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state income tax proposal on millionaires, which is expected to raise about $3.5 billion by 2029, would fund universal free school meals + tax relief measures. Governor Ferguson and state Sen. Marcus Riccelli from Spokane are pushing for the bill as it awaits a vote in the House.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local non-profit — focused on mental health support — is offering help to mothers with counseling sessions and resource programs to ease everyday challenges. The group partners with community providers to expand services and reach mothers in need today.  KXLY
