  • Janet Mann—who founded Children's Ark in 1995 and cared for 120 foster children—was honored with the YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award this week after she was fatally struck by a car downtown last summer, and the driver was sentenced to probation.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, March 15, 2025, downtown Spokane hosted its annual St. Patrick's Day parade featuring trucks, floats, dancers and pugs in green as dry weather replaced clouds and temperatures lingered in the low 40s—families gathered along the streets to celebrate Irish traditions.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Symphony’s concertmaster Mateusz Wolski composed an original violin solo inspired by Over the Rainbow for astronaut Anne McClain, who is set to join NASA’s Crew-10 mission to the International Space Station, and he recorded the piece on his iPhone last weekend—he will share a higher-quality version and perform it as an encore at Masterworks concerts on March 29—30 at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.  The Spokesman-Review
  • During the St. Patrick’s Day on Monroe event, some attendees saw fire engines near the North Monroe parking garage and the Spokane Fire Department later learned that steam was mistaken for smoke—triggering a false alarm—and thanked the public for spotting the issue.  KHQ

  • Coyotes are increasingly seen in Spokane neighborhoods as they search for food and fewer predators keep them away from natural habitats. Experts advise residents to secure small pets and avoid feeding the animals (WDFW guidelines).  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane astronaut and Crew-10 commander Anne McClain has arrived at the International Space Station after a 29-hour journey with her crew, who launched from Kennedy Space Center on Saturday with fellow NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers, Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, and Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi. The handover with Crew-9 is set to begin soon as their return could start Wednesday if weather permits.  The Spokesman-Review

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local developers are planning several projects in Spokane with Catholic Charities proposing to renovate a housing complex near Spokane Community College into 123 units, Cary Snow developing a 500-unit mixed-use project at Gem at Midway, and Scott Milionis designing a three-story residential building in South Hill. The projects involve investments from $1.8 million to $85 million—indicating a growing real estate market.  The Spokesman-Review

  • On Saturday night at the Arena, the Spokane Chiefs beat the Tri-City Americans 5—1 as their defense limited the opposition to 17 shots and Andrew Cristall scored a goal and added an assist. With four games left in the regular season, the team has already locked in a playoff seed and will host later rounds on April 2 and 3.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Zephyr forward Emina Ekic scored a free kick in stoppage time that gave her team a dramatic 3-2 win over visiting DC Power at ONE Spokane Stadium on Saturday afternoon (the victory boosted Zephyr's standings).
