COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Power was restored to all Spokane Avista customers after Wednesday's windstorm cut service to over 60,000. Crews finished work by Saturday evening (nearly 300 workers helped) and Avista announced the restored power on Sunday. The Spokesman-Review
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Servatron Inc. will close its Spokane Valley plant on Dec. 31 as its parent company Volex shifts operations to Irvine in California — a move that may cost the community 100 jobs. Customers and employees have already received early notice. KHQ
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Public Library received a Yiddish Book Center grant to add 50 Yiddish translated materials to its catalog and fund a yearlong event series including a live performance and film screening on April 26. Librarian Becky Mace attended a three day workshop to learn about the cultural heritage of the Yiddish language. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ At the Oscars, the locally filmed Train Dreams received four nominations but did not win any awards + Spokane crew gathered at Poole Public House and expressed hope the film draws more filmmakers to our scenic landscapes. The Spokesman-Review
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A fire swept through downtown Spokane in August 1889, destroying the Eagle Block at Riverside and Stevens; it was rebuilt six months later as a multi-use space for stores, offices and lodging.
