ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, Spokane firefighters arrived within three minutes at a garage fire on the 4000 block of North Jefferson Street at 9:25 a.m.—the blaze had threatened a nearby home and caused big damage—and investigators said a tipped candle started the fire with no injuries reported.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • A silver alert was issued after 78-year-old Terry Delozier (with dementia and missing his medication) was last seen leaving Dishman Rd in Spokane Valley at 6 a.m. on March 18 and officials believe he is heading toward Portland.  KHQ
  • U.S. Marshals arrested 34 year old Fredric G. Hamberg on Tuesday near Lincoln Road and north Division Street in Spokane after a drive-by shooting investigation linked him to firing into his former girlfriend's vehicle — he faces felony charges of second degree assault, unlawful firearm possession and domestic violence.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 18, nine student performers at Gonzaga shared personal stories at the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center during the 15th annual Diversity Monologues event—hosted by the Unity Multicultural Education Center. They explored themes of identity and emotion under the title 'Echoes of the Soul' while receiving coaching from Emmy-nominated poet Christian Paige.  Gonzaga University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Small northern saw-whet owls live year-round in the Inland Northwest and hide well among trees. They hunt rodents at night + call with a toot-toot sound during March and early April + males fly in circles to show they are looking for a mate.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Washington State Department of Natural Resources planned a prescribed fire on 422 acres near Lake Spokane Campground—located by Highway 291 and Corkscrew Road—to reduce wildfire risk and restore forest health. The burn will begin on March 25 and may lead to lane restrictions, so the public is advised to avoid the area.  KHQ
  • Dishman Hills Conservancy bought a 12 acre Keystone Connection Property to connect its Glenrose unit and Dishman Hills Natural Area, and it will build a new trail there to replace an unofficial path. Dan Wilson and Tim Theis said volunteers from Spokane Mountaineers are soon set to clear debris and finalize plans—helping to offer a safer route and protect local wildlife.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Spokane will host the western half of the NCAA women’s bracket next weekend after the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games. The Spokane Sports Commission said more events include a youth basketball clinic— a volleyball tournament and a panel for women in sports to share their stories.  KHQ
