- ➤ In 1940, Mrs. Howard C. Paulsen and local society women started a Bundles for Britain chapter and opened a thrift shop at 926 W. Riverside Ave to collect clothing and linens for British relief. - ➤ At Tuesday’s Spokane Valley City Council meeting, members advanced a proposal by a 6—1 vote to ask voters in the fall to approve a 0.1% sales tax that would raise about $2.6 million annually for police services amid rising costs and plans for seven new positions. The council scheduled the measure’s first reading on April 1 and will set the election date before the state’s filing deadline to avoid a 1% property tax increase that has not been used for 17 years.
