COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Spokane Rock Rollers Club is hosting a three-day gem and mineral show at the Spokane County Fair + Expo Center from today to Sunday; the event features over 40 dealers, stone cutting demonstrations plus children’s activities, with adult admission at $12 and free entry for kids 12 and under.  KHQ
  • The Ronald McDonald House is hosting its annual Windermere Supply Drive this week to collect donations for families with sick children. Donations may drop off at Windermere Real Estate offices until 3 p.m. Friday or via drive-thru at 1028 W. Fifth Ave. from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.  KXLY
  • Retired Roosevelt Elementary teachers formed the FFFABS group over their 40+ years of friendship. They meet monthly for lunch or happy hour to share meals, memories and support during life's ups and downs.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A judge ruled that Mead School District is liable in a hazing case (details remain limited) and school officials have not announced any next steps.  KXLY
  • Orchestra director Jerilynn Harris was honored as School Orchestra Director of the Year (award received in February) at the Washington Music Educators Association conference in Yakima after a decade at Libby School’s Odyssey program. They also lead the Odyssey Community Music Club and conduct the Spokane Youth Symphony Sinfonietta.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a mild winter, the Department of Natural Resources in Washington is launching fire mitigation measures to protect communities plus natural areas as officials warn a harsher fire season is possible.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane will add an enhanced crosswalk at the Southeast Blvd and 16th Ave intersection as part of the Urban Mobility Project that will create 27 miles of connected walking and biking routes. Local pedestrians support the upgrade — saying it will make a risky crossing safer.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane Regional Health District confirmed a measles exposure from last March at public spots and urged residents to check vaccination records and call a doctor if symptoms appear. The agency stressed that vaccination is the best protection.  KXLY
  • Spokane now ranks as one of the worst cities for pollen allergies, coming in 9th in the latest Allergy Capitals report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The sharp jump from 82nd last year reflects climate change driving earlier and longer pollen seasons.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dean Duncan began running Bloomsday in 1977 when he tackled an 8-mile race and has completed every run since; now 84, he will join the 50th anniversary run this year, focusing on finishing at his own pace (a lifelong passion).  The Spokesman-Review
