- ➤ In 1889, Stephen M. Smith arrived in Spokane to start a funeral business that grew into a 1911 French rococo funeral home on W. Riverside, which served the area for nearly 90 years before closing and later being restored as North Coast Plaza in 1988. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Grammy-nominated pop singer Benson Boone announced his Wanted Man tour will stop at the Numerica Veterans Arena this August. Spokane locals can look forward to the concert event as part of Boone’s upcoming tour. KHQ
- ➤ Last weekend, Spokane Symphony staged its Masterworks 7: Primavera concert where conductor James Lowe led a spring celebration of Italian-themed works (including a moving tribute by soloist Mateusz Wolski to his ailing wife). The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction begins today on East Wellesley Avenue as crews rebuild the road between Freya Street and Havana Street. Drivers will face detours with separate routes for eastbound and westbound traffic until the work is completed by the end of July. KXLY
- ➤ The final stage of the West Francis Avenue and 9 Mile Road project begins today as southbound 9 Mile Road is reduced to one lane between Wind River Road and Rifle Club Road and closed to pedestrians; northbound remains two lanes. The work will improve Northwest Terrace and finish mid-May. KXLY
- ➤ HUD is investigating Washington’s Covenant Home Ownership Program for alleged illegal discrimination — a probe coming as local groups, including the Spokane NAACP, say the specialized loans help minorities overcome historic redlining. KHQ
- ➤ Three major road projects begin today in Spokane, causing lane closures and detours. City officials advise drivers to slow down in construction zones & use alternative routes. KHQ
- ➤ Drivers face lane reductions on East Sprague Avenue today in a project costing ($3 million) that replaces a water main and upgrades ADA ramps between Freya and Havana, improving stormwater management. Traffic will run one lane each way from Haven to Fancher while businesses stay open and work ends mid-June. KXLY
