COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Spokane will hold a free Climate Planning Community Workshop on Earth Day at West Central Community Center (1603 N Belt Street) to gather community ideas for the PlanSpokane 2046 update. The family-friendly event will occur from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 and will let participants visit stations and enter a raffle for prizes.  City of Spokane
  • Monday was the last chance to register for Bloomsday at the discounted rate of $28—after today the fee increases to $35, and the 12K race is set for Sunday, May 4.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A semi-truck rolled over on westbound I-90 near the Broadway exit at milepost 286 in Spokane Valley just before 3 a.m. Monday and leaked diesel fuel while emergency crews from Washington State Patrol—Spokane County Sheriff's Office—Spokane Valley Fire—and the Department of Ecology responded; no one was injured.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane Police are asking for help from the public to identify a witness to a fatal crash at Market and Francis where a young man died in a collision on March 28th just after 3:30 p.m.—the investigation noted surveillance footage of a dark Ford extended cab pickup truck from the late 90s or early 2000s with a light stripe along the bottom.  City of Spokane

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga is expanding its research and creative inquiry projects with support from private and community foundation gifts. The university will fund 10 students in the new GRO-MECS program for six to 10 weeks and host workshops (covering topics such as safety risks for seniors and climate resilience) to boost academic inquiry.  Gonzaga University
  • Gonzaga students Sophie Kuhn and Matt Braatz helped residents at Gonzaga Family Haven (an affordable housing complex for formerly houseless families) overcome high school challenges by tutoring and mentoring them, which helped Jacob Mitchell graduate and encouraged more than 300 Prep students and volunteers to support the effort. Their work builds a program that bridges home and school while breaking the cycle of poverty.  Gonzaga University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers are debating ways to close a big budget gap and may cut funds for programs that help people without homes—money for the Encampment Resolution Program will drop from $70 million to $45 million a year for the next two years. Local leaders in Spokane warn that the funding change may slow work to help people move off the streets and into housing.  KXLY

  • Lookout Pass ski resort offers free skiing today when guests show a voucher so they can enjoy fresh mountain snow in spring. The resort’s press release used an April Fools twist to announce the offer (voucher required).  KXLY
