COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Libraries across Spokane County are collecting nonperishable food donations in April for the annual Bites and Books drive to help families in need. Donations will also be accepted at the Spokane Zephyr FC match at One Spokane Stadium on April 26. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane plans to connect Fish Lake Trail with Centennial Trail at Fifth Avenue and Government Way to offer a safer and more inviting route. The project, which includes repaving, new lights, signs + warning systems at the railroad tunnel, will begin mid-summer and continue into fall amid strong community support. KXLY
- ➤ Northwest Connect is offering special food pantry hours today for TSA workers at its Northeast Food Pantry (located at 4520 N. Crestline St.) with shifts from 8 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. KXLY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden reopens today at 10:00 a.m. in Manito Park — visitors can enjoy the garden until 6:00 p.m., which was established in 1974 to honor Spokane’s friendship with Nishinomiya. KHQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eight high school students from Spokane will travel to Arizona in May for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair after qualifying regionally. The group from Lewis and Clark (LC) and Ferris High Schools will show research on wildfire smoke effects and Alzheimer’s treatment. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane Colleges established an AAS-T transfer agreement with the University of Idaho to allow Natural Resource Studies graduates, including Tribal students, to enter the Wildlife — Human/Wildlife Interactions BS program; the deal will be highlighted at a Natural Resource Summit on April 14 at the Coeur d’Alene Casino in Worley. - ➤ The Spokane County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to support petitioning the Washington State Transportation Commission for renaming the I-90 overpass at Four Lakes in honor of Sgt. Kenneth Salas (who served over 30 years and was killed responding to a highway hazard last summer). KXLY
- ➤ The city of Spokane and regional partners will hold a wildfire evacuation drill on Saturday, April 25 in the Latah-Hangman and Eagle Ridge neighborhoods — a chance for residents to practice their evacuation plans and receive drill-specific alerts. KXLY

- ➤ Tuesday's GSL high school sports showed strong local play in baseball and soccer. Ferris defeated Cheney 13-2 as Ballen Robinson drove in four runs and East Valley shut out Rogers 8-0, while in soccer Clarkston edged North Central 3-2 with a 60th-minute goal. The Spokesman-Review
