ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash blocked the left lane of I-90 eastbound near Hamilton Street in Spokane on Friday around 5 p.m.—drivers were advised to consider alternate routes.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Steven P. White, 46, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 3 years of community custody after fatally stabbing 44-year-old Shan Anderson in an unprovoked downtown attack before 1:00 a.m. on August 27—Anderson’s body was later located near Wall St. and W. Railroad Ave.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga University received a second $5 million gift from Terry and Patt Payne to support scholarships and services for low income undergraduates from Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon (the donation honors President Thayne McCulloh's leadership as he ends his 16 year term in July). A portion of the gift will also help Native American student programs to strengthen campus support.  Gonzaga University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Track Academy in Spokane will hand out 1,000 free tree seedlings on April 19 for its 5th annual Tree Hero event. The school will set up stations to teach about the environment + offer food, music and carnival-like activities during the morning.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Spokane has joined BlueSky — a social media platform that lets people share short posts, images, and videos. Residents are invited to follow the city and Mayor Lisa Brown on BlueSky while the city will still use its other channels for updates.  KXLY
  • The City of Spokane joined BlueSky on April 4th at 10:02 a.m. to boost communication with residents and share news via short posts, images, and videos — residents are advised to follow the official city and Mayor Lisa Brown's accounts.  City of Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Washington State University developed an AI tool to identify animals that may harbor dangerous viruses—this model uses both animal traits and virus genetics to flag outbreak hotspots in Southeast Asia, equatorial Africa, and the Amazon and will help guide future wildlife monitoring.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • After years of work to meet MLB rules, the Spokane Indians completed key upgrades to the 67-year-old Avista Stadium that include a new playing field, expanded dugouts and a modern indoor facility—improving safety and performance. Contractors started installing a 30-foot video board on Wednesday and expect to finish it by June to boost the fan experience.  The Spokesman-Review
