COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eight-year-old Jackson George was honored by Spokane Regional Emergency Communications and Spokane Valley Fire Department after he called 911 when he found his mom having a seizure earlier this year — his calm call helped medics arrive quickly and save her life. He received a special award in a ceremony that shared the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency.  KHQ
  • The Pacific Power Foundation is awarding $312,675 in grants to nonprofits supporting safety, health and wellness programs in Oregon, Washington and Northern California — Spokane Valley Partners and others will use the funds to provide food assistance, shelter and care for teens, seniors, veterans and survivors of abuse.  KHQ
  • Spokane Lime e-scooter and e-bike riders can now help domestic violence survivors through a new YWCA partnership by rounding up their ride costs in the app—this donation directly supports local survivors and provides needed resources.  KHQ
  • Business and community groups are hosting a range of Easter egg hunts across Spokane and north Idaho for families from toddlers to seniors—The guide lists events held today at the Simply Northwest Store, on April 12 at Bru Coffee Hause, and additional hunts on April 19 and 20.  KHQ
  • Spokane kids will run Jr. Bloomsday this Sunday at Spokane Falls Community College in a one-mile race to earn event shirts; the entry fee is $20 (registration deadline is today). Bloomsday Board President Michael Kiter urged kids to get active, rest well, and eat healthy while his 9-year-old son Gabriel looks forward to running and joining his school's cross country team later.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Commissioners will vote Tuesday at 2 p.m. on amendments to expand stormwater service in unincorporated areas and standardize fees—starting at $48 in 2026 and rising by $12 each year until 2029—to fund repairs for roads and drainage systems.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane County Treasurer’s Office will offer off-site property tax payment services at Spokane Valley City Hall on April 18 and April 25 and at North Spokane Library on April 22 and April 29. Residents can pay by check or by credit+debit card with applicable card fees.  KHQ
  • Spokane Police introduced a specialized dialogue team to manage tomorrow’s demonstrations at B.A. Clark Park—after tensions rose from recent protests. The team will wear blue shirts and police vests instead of tactical gear—aiming to lower friction and protect constitutional rights.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tim Brandle, the co-chair of the Cougar Collective, said he welcomes federal regulation of Name, Image, and Likeness to keep college sports fair as private donors use big sums to pay top recruits. U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner proposed the Restore College Sports Act—this bill would replace the NCAA with a system that equally shares TV, ticket, and deal revenues among athletes and schools.  KHQ
  • Rodney Rice, a 6-foot-4 guard from Maryland, listed Gonzaga as one of six schools he is considering after planning Zoom meetings on Thursday—adding his name to Gonzaga's transfer recruitment efforts. Delaware guard Izaiah Pasha canceled his official visit after Gonzaga went another route and will visit Texas Tech with a commitment announcement expected on April 16.  The Spokesman-Review
