- ➤ On Monday, April 14, 2025 — City officials announced a celebration of 25 years of Neighborhood Services with a community event at Central Library. The event will be held on Thursday, April 17 with a 7 p.m. pre-party and an 8 p.m. main show featuring live music, interviews, and the launch of a new civic guide for neighbors. City of Spokane
- ➤ Veterans from Spokane are set to board the Inland Northwest Honor Flight from Spokane International Airport this week as 85 Vietnam War, 7 Korean War and 2 World War II veterans depart Wednesday morning from Alaska Airlines baggage claim for a 9:00 a.m. flight to Washington DC and return Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (The public is invited to join the send-off) (and welcome them home). - ➤ On April 14, SCRAPS asked for four charges to be brought against WildWoof Kennel in Airway Heights after officers seized 171 animals during a failed inspection—two charges for animal cruelty and two for unsafe confinement. KHQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ LaunchNW awarded $920,000 in grants to rural Eastern Washington schools to support education for students after high school. Several districts including Reardan, Lind Ritzville and Clarkston received funds to boost transition and career readiness—efforts that help prepare students for future work. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane City Council approved an amendment to its towing contract with Evergreen State Towing during Monday’s session to address the growing issue of abandoned RVs in local neighborhoods. The contract change improves service by allowing towing — impoundment and disposal when needed — and takes effect immediately. KHQ
- ➤ Last Thursday, ICE agents visited a Spokane Valley home to conduct a welfare check on a 16-year-old who fled Honduras two years ago, and the agents were seen in casual clothes with multiple vehicles outside. ICE said these checks began in January to protect unaccompanied alien youth & local attorneys worry the approach may cause unnecessary fear and anxiety. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Spokane County will ask voters to reauthorize its 40-year-old aquifer protection area for another 20 years, which will include Spokane for the first time since 2004 and charge $15 per year for single-family homes connected to water. The Spokane City Council voted unanimously Monday (requesting the county include the city) as the measure will appear on an upcoming ballot (about 300 homes not on sewer systems will pay the extra fee).
