COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A junior at Central Valley High School got a Seahawks themed bedroom makeover from nonprofit Special Deeds for Special Needs; he has been involved with the group since 3rd grade. The program plans five surprise makeovers each year+ this project is its first reveal.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Businesses along Sprague face reduced customer traffic due to ongoing road construction that slows access. Local officials are reviewing options to ease disruptions for commerce.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Over 1,350 job seekers attended a one-day job fair at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center on Tuesday where over 100 employers provided leads and hired candidates on the spot. WorkSource Spokane advises those who missed the event to call for help in connecting with local employers.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center on April 8, Gonzaga held its first Presidential Speaker Series event + Laboratories of Hope, where President Katia Passerini and sustainability experts discussed local and global climate challenges and encouraged actionable solutions for ecological renewal.  Gonzaga University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Spokane Riverkeeper is hosting a free, family-friendly river cleanup on Saturday, Apr. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at High Bridge Park; volunteers will receive supplies and enjoy food trucks with learning activities from partnering organizations.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners voted on Tuesday to keep the Patricia Simonet Laughing Dog Park open after dozens of community members raised concerns about its planned closure. The board rescinded a termination notice on the park's lease with WSDOT and county staff will continue maintenance while working on a long-term solution.  KHQ
  • The Department of Natural Resources began seasonal firefighter training today in Spokane to prepare over 500 firefighters with fuel reduction work and equipment practice for the upcoming wildfire season. The program readies crews to respond to fires across the Inland Northwest.  KXLY
  • Spokane City Council approved a contract with Breithaupt + Sons to move the John R. Monaghan statue from downtown to Fairmount Memorial Park for $88,000; the statue stood for a century at Monroe Street and Riverside Avenue and has a plaque with outdated language.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga walk-on guard Joaquim ArauzMoore, who spent three seasons with the team, announced Tuesday he is entering the NCAA transfer portal and becomes the sixth player to do so.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington State signed Division II transfer guard Lazerek Houston from Central Missouri on Tuesday; he averaged 20.8 points last season and his addition bolsters a roster adjusting after 12 departures including Manhattan transfer Fraser Roxburgh.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Roger Risinger, a longtime Bloomsday runner since 1977, is preparing for the 50th race on the first Sunday in May. He will host a postrace barbecue with family members participating, including his 1-year-old grandchild, as he carries on the tradition despite recent knee replacements (age 72).  The Spokesman-Review
