- ➤ Downtown Spokane Partnership is cleaning up downtown to get ready for upcoming spring events Bloomsday, Pride, and the Lilac Festival + it is asking local residents to help by painting over graffiti, cleaning parking lots, and prepping seasonal planters. The group maintains 83 square blocks and offers a planter sponsorship program + encouraging community support for well-kept public spaces. KXLY

- ➤ Spokane County Medical Examiner confirmed that 65-year-old Lynn Zahniser died with her two dogs in a hoarding fire on South Hill on April 9 near 27th Avenue and Wall Street just before 1 a.m.—firefighters took about an hour to control the blaze and investigators continue to look into the cause. - ➤ The Spokesman-Review changed ownership Tuesday from the Cowles family to a local nonprofit led by Executive Editor Rob Curley— the paper will continue with six print editions and digital service behind a paywall while it seeks donations to lessen its reliance on advertising revenue. KXLY

- ➤ Amari Troutt, a senior and president of Gonzaga’s Black Student Union, has led initiatives such as Grill and Chill — a joint event with local colleges — and a BSU dinner to build inclusion on campus and strengthen ties in Spokane. - ➤ Eastern Washington University’s cybersecurity team finished second at the NCAE Cyber Games National Invitational in Tampa, Florida on April 12 — a contest that brought together top teams from elite cybersecurity schools — and they showed skill that will help them in future events. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Spokane City Council voted unanimously on Monday against proposed Federal and State cuts to Medicaid because one in four residents relies on it for vital services (mental health, treatment for opioid issues and homeless response) and the resolution directs the City Clerk to send copies to the Governor and legislative representatives (to protect funding). - ➤ The Spokane Park Board will vote today at 3:30 p.m. on placing a $240 million levy on the November ballot to fund the Parks and Recreation Department under the Together Spokane plan—if approved, the levy will pay for new multi-purpose sports fields and improvements at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex. The plan also includes a $200 million bond to support Spokane Schools and over 200 community projects. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane City Council voted to amend its contract with Evergreen State Towing so the company tows, impounds and disposes of abandoned RVs amid growing safety concerns in neighborhoods. The change takes effect immediately to clear the streets. City of Spokane
- ➤ Spokane City Council approved a $125,000 contract with Evergreen State Towing to remove abandoned and disabled RVs from city streets until September, while the city negotiates a long-term contract after state reimbursements paused last September. Councilman Michael Cathcart and police officials said the measure is a public safety priority + addresses vehicles that serve as drop points for criminal activity. The Spokesman-Review
