- ➤ The Hope Center will open May 1 at 13326 West Sunset Highway in Airway Heights to offer free clothing, household items, and support services to residents in need. WHEN and the West Plains Safety Alliance have partnered to provide programs like victim services and LEAD for those facing violence or instability. KHQ
- ➤ On April 17, Coats 4 Kids hosted its Closet Cleanout where residents donated gently used and new coats for kids in need across the Inland Northwest—hundreds of coats were collected in partnership with STCU. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane city leaders are exploring new traffic safety measures after traffic fatalities and serious injuries nearly doubled between 2019 and 2024. Officials will consider adding no turn on red signs in busy downtown areas — an effort to lower collision risks. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane will celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26—from 11 am to 2 pm—at the John A. Finch Arboretum with free family activities, live music, environmental education and tree care demonstrations. The event includes a Tree City USA ceremony at noon, free seedlings, a temporary disc golf course and limited compost bins for Spokane County residents who bring proof of residency. City of Spokane

- ➤ Three Gonzaga seniors launched Muv—an app that helps students find events on campus and in the community—in October 2024. The app partnered with local business Zola for a break-out event that drew about 600 students downtown, and the seniors expect to expand its reach to other colleges as they finish their studies. - ➤ Mayor Lisa Brown issued a statement yesterday about the Washington Supreme Court ruling on Proposition 1 that clarified local initiative powers and confirmed that the city’s unlawful camping ordinance remains in effect. She said the city deployed opioid settlement funds to add more sobering beds and is working with Spokane County to expand crisis stabilization and housing options to address homelessness. - ➤ The Department of Natural Resources has agreed to trade 192 acres of undeveloped forest land south of Thorpe Road for a grocery store property in Bellingham. Blue Fern Development will buy the Haggen site for $16.22 million and exchange it plus $7 million in cash, with the deal scheduled to close July 15—prompting strong opposition from local conservationists. - ➤ Measles, once declared eliminated in 2000, has returned as Texas faces an outbreak with over 540 cases and 712 cases nationwide — three measles-related deaths — while Washington reported two cases in King and Snohomish counties with no new local cases in Spokane since February 2024.
