Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Friday’s bike consignment drop-off and registration took place before the Spokane Bike Swap and Expo opened today at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. Attendees can choose from hundreds of new and used bicycles — along with bike gear and accessories from more than 50 exhibitors. KXLY
- ➤ Maddie's Place, a Spokane nonprofit that helps babies born to mothers with substance abuse, may face a funding crisis because Washington has a $16 billion budget shortfall while lawmakers debate cuts and tax increases. CEO Shaun Cross warned the center might reduce the number of babies treated from 16 to 4 a day (raising concerns as the need for services grows). KHQ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ New body camera footage has become key evidence in a civil rights lawsuit alleging excessive force by Spokane County Deputy Samuel Turner, who mistakenly arrested resident Joshua Clark at Hometown Studio Apartments in October 2023—charges that were dropped five months later. KHQ
- ➤ A Spokane jury found Luis Esquivel-Bolanos, a Mexican national, guilty of drug and weapons crimes linked to the Jalisco Cartel and a trafficking network in eastern Washington and Montana—he will face life imprisonment and deportation when sentenced on July 16. KXLY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A coalition of current and former mayors asked the planning commission to rename the Post Street Bridge in honor of Dr. John Moyer, a physician who co-founded Friends of the Falls and helped protect the Spokane River gorge. The commission will decide next week whether to send the proposal to the full city council—if approved, the bridge will carry an honorary name while Post Street stays unchanged. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane officials and Catholic Charities Eastern Washington launched a program that reserves three beds at the House of Charity exclusively for first responders transporting unhoused people between 9 p.m. and midnight. First responders will call to confirm availability and officials say the measure connects people to needed shelter services — a new tool for public safety. KXLY
