  • Spokane County residents are invited to join the first-ever Battle of the Badges Blood Drive—a friendly competition between the Spokane County Sheriff's Office and Fire District 9 that offers free food from Caruso’s Sandwiches and Artisan Pizza with every blood donation.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, The Spokesman-Review continues under Cowles Publishing while plans are set in motion to become a nonprofit if the community matches a $2 million donation within the next 12 months, and the paper will keep its building and six-day print schedule. The newsroom will add new journalist positions and upgrade its systems as it shifts to a hybrid funding model built to support local journalism.  The Spokesman-Review

CRIME NEWS

  • A 44-year-old man was arrested during a traffic stop on I-90 today for allegedly trafficking narcotics after a three-month investigation.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Despite gloomy weather, hundreds of volunteers cleaned up the banks of the Spokane River during the annual Earth Day cleanup organized by Riverkeeper. More than 600 people signed up at High Bridge Park — over 300 were working by 10:30 a.m. to remove trash that can pollute local water.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Transit Authority announced that the Route 11 bus in Spokane will change its route on May 18th to include stops by the Spokane County Courthouse and City Hall. The new loop — designed to improve service between downtown, the North Bank and Kendall Yards — will help residents better connect throughout the city.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane’s Dwight Merkel Sports Complex added a new AED on Saturday to help people with sudden cardiac arrest; the device, placed near the restrooms, has a heated, ventilated cabinet that sounds an alarm and activates a camera when opened — Project 100 said it may improve emergency response.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jalen Warley transferred to Gonzaga from Virginia after playing at three schools in one year and choosing Gonzaga after a brief visit to Spokane. He is working on improving his shot while coach Stephen Gentry said he will boost the team’s defense this season — his patience and focus mark his new start at Gonzaga.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Kelvin Sampson recalled his early days at Washington State when he lost 18 straight games and athletic director Jim Livengood trusted him to keep coaching. Sampson said that Livengood’s belief helped him build a long career that has earned him nearly 700 Division I wins.  The Spokesman-Review
