- ➤ Kids in Spokane Valley can register for swim lessons starting today at 8 a.m. at Park Road — Terrace View — Valley Mission pools. The two-week sessions run Monday through Thursday, cost $48, and offer scholarships for families in need. KXLY
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, April 21, Spokane Valley Police arrested a suspect following an alleged stabbing on the 8200 block of East Boone that injured two adults, and officers have blocked the area as investigators work the case. KHQ
- ➤ A Spokane County public defender, John Sather Gowdy, was accused of theft and money laundering after he allegedly misused over $40,000 from the non-profit Heal Spokane for personal purchases and gambling at Northern Quest Casino between 2018 and 2022, and he still works as a public defender. - ➤ Federal authorities arrested Jesus Salas-Rubio—wanted for homicide in Mexico—near East Mission Avenue at 9:30 a.m. on April 18th and booked him into Spokane County Jail while Mexican authorities were notified. KXLY
- ➤ A person was killed Monday afternoon in a reported shooting near the Amazon Fulfillment Center on West Geiger Blvd. and South Hayford Road — police said a suspect was detained while authorities continue their investigation. The Spokesman-Review
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane City Council voted 6-1 on Monday to pass a law that will soon make it illegal for employers to ask about a candidate's homelessness or to reject an application because of lacking a permanent address. The measure—part of a pared-down homeless bill of rights proposal—positions the city as a national leader in job equality. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Airway Heights Fire Department is hosting a live fire sprinkler demonstration today at 6 p.m. at 1149 S. Garfield Road. Fire crews will set two identical rooms on fire—one with sprinklers and one without—to show how quickly the systems activate to control flames. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane City Council voted four to three to not reinstate Proposition 1, a law banning camping near parks, schools and daycare centers that 75% of voters had supported before the Washington Supreme Court struck it down on Thursday. Some council members wanted to act quickly while others, including Councilwoman Klitzke, will wait for police guidance due Wednesday before making any changes (a sign of a divided council). - ➤ On Monday night, Spokane City Council passed the Ban the Address ordinance that stops businesses from requiring job applicants to list their home address or housing history before offering a job—making Spokane the first U.S. city to adopt such a rule. Supporters say the measure will protect people experiencing homelessness. KXLY
