  • On Saturday, April 26th, Finch Arboretum will host a free Arbor Day Celebration from 11 a.m.—2 p.m. to honor Spokane’s 22nd year as a Tree City USA, featuring a noon tree planting ceremony and family activities rain or shine.  City of Spokane

CRIME NEWS

  • The FBI is investigating a rise in cases of individuals pointing lasers at aircraft near Spokane International Airport and in neighborhoods including West Plains, Nine Mile Falls, Green Bluff, and Hillyard — local officials are working with the agency to find those involved while a conviction could lead to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Symphony Chorale will perform Hayden’s 'The Creation' this weekend during Masterworks 8: Let There Be Light to retell the Biblical creation story through nearly two hours of music under conductor James Lowe (featuring three soloists portraying key roles in the narrative).  The Spokesman-Review

  • Hundreds of job seekers attended the Spokane County Career Expo on Wednesday where more than 150 vendors offered opportunities from industries including food services, wholesale trade, hospitality, and health care. Employers stressed the need for commitment and specialized skills as they worked to fill roles in a competitive job market.  KHQ

  • Gonzaga senior Talia Frausto blends computer science and dance while taking on leadership roles as a student assistant and ambassador—she has participated in TED Talks and study abroad programs. Frausto said her community support fuels her passion for both fields—she plans to build a career in the Pacific Northwest after graduation.  Gonzaga University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washington Supreme Court blocked a camping ban approved by 75% of Spokane voters after a 2023 ballot measure backed by attorney Brian Hansen, and Mayor Lisa Brown said the city’s earlier anti-camping rules remain in effect. Pope Francis died on April 21 from a stroke and a special mass will be held today at noon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes—while Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a law limiting other states’ National Guard from entering without his approval.  Inlander

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Veena Singh from the Spokane County medical examiner reported that overdose deaths increased 300% since 2018, with most deaths happening in homes or apartments and 80% showing fentanyl—law enforcement also noted a sharp rise in drug calls and Narcan use over the past three years.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Joddie Gleason announced on Tuesday that Eastern Washington women's basketball signed three new players—Caitie Gingras, Emma Myers, and Brielle Magnuson—to join the team for the fall season. They join earlier signees Elyn Bowers, Dylyn Dress, and Madeline Gibbs, with Gingras coming from CSU Bakersfield, Myers from Ridgeline High School, and Magnuson from a championship team in Walla Walla.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Tuesday's announcements from Gonzaga men's basketball revealed that players such as Graham Ike and Braden Huff will return next season as the program finishes its roster with athletes favored for high potential—on the same day, the Spokane Chiefs won 5—4 in double overtime against the Victoria Royals to clinch a spot in the conference finals with their series set to begin Friday.  The Spokesman-Review
