COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Latah Hangman and Eagle Ridge will take part in a wildfire evacuation drill this Saturday morning (designed to test emergency readiness) under guidance from local officials.  KXLY
  • Spokane will host several major events over the coming months, and airfare prices are expected to rise for visitors arriving by air. Rising travel costs could impact plans for those coming to the city.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Symphony will perform Verdi’s Requiem—a 90-minute nonstop choral concert—on Saturday and Sunday at the Fox Theater with volunteer members of the Spokane Symphony Chorale sharing the stage.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Four local theater groups are staging 'Shrek the Musical' with overlapping shows. Aspire Community Theatre in Coeur d’Alene opens this weekend (through May 3), TAC at the Lake in Liberty Lake begins on May 8, and two Spokane groups start on May 22.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chapter BO of the Philanthropic Educational Organization celebrated its centennial today at Rockwood Community Event Center in the Summit — members donned glittery attire and danced to the Charleston while raising funds for local scholarships.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Chuck Murphy has dedicated 57 years to Gonzaga, overseeing campus improvements and student support since enrolling in 1969. His work has included building athletic centers and housing projects, and he now helps plan future upgrades for the university.  Gonzaga University
  • A state grant has helped local childcare centers plan extra spots for children. The centers will use the new funds soon — details on the opening timetable are expected soon.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Finch Arboretum will host a free Arbor Day event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a 1 p.m. ceremony led by Mayor Lisa Brown to mark 23 years as Tree City USA and unveil nature trail while families enjoy music, crafts, tree seedlings and compost bins (proof required).  KHQ
  • Arbor Day Celebration 2026 is set for Saturday, April 25 at Finch Arboretum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mayor Lisa Brown will cut the ribbon on the renovated Touch and See Nature Trail at 1 p.m., and families can enjoy free seedlings, live music, environmental education, and recycling demos.  City of Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A 2025 report from the Spokane Valley Fire Department shows crews handling a record 25,393 calls with EMS incidents making up 83% of demand. Growth in the area — linked to local expansion — increased call volume for several units and spurred a $5.5 million federal grant for wildfire mitigation.  KHQ
  • City of Spokane Valley says drivers on eastbound and westbound Trent near Pines now use a temporary road built for the Pines Road — BNSF Grade Separation project. Lane restrictions remain until August.  KHQ

  • Spokane launches a Summer of Soccer campaign that will host fan zones at Gesa Pavilion on June 19 and July 19 and boost transit on select routes from June 1 through July 25 (featuring youth camps, sports events, and local business toolkits) as part of FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations.  KHQ
  • Gonzaga kept key players—Braden Huff, Davis Fogle and Mario Saint-Supery—from entering the transfer portal Tuesday night, keeping coach Few's roster intact for the upcoming season in Spokane. It also added Isiah Harwell, and Huff, recovering from knee surgery, remains draft eligible until May.  The Spokesman-Review
