  • Captain Kevin Smith, a Spokane firefighter, saved a toddler from drowning during his vacation in Mexico when he saw a commotion near his hotel’s beach and dove into rough surf—administering rescue breaths that revived her—earning praise from the Spokane Fire Department.  KHQ
  • Downtown Spokane will host Spring Clean Week from Monday through Friday, May 2 as over 100 volunteers join daily beautification tasks—litter pickup, sidewalk sweeping, and graffiti removal—with support from the City of Spokane Waste Department and local sponsors. After Mother’s Day, students from The Community School will plant over 200 sidewalk planters to enhance the area for Bloomsday and the Lilac Festival.  KHQ

  • Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated in May to honor the rich histories and contributions of these communities. Gonzaga will co-sponsor events themed Echoes: Letters for New Tomorrows with visiting authors, art shows + film screenings throughout the month.  Gonzaga University
  • Music lovers can attend a three-day bluegrass festival from May 23 to 25 at Green Bluff Grange in Colbert featuring Montana bands and local favorites, while on-site camping begins May 22 at 10 a.m. with free spots for the first 20 campers—ticket options vary by day and age.  KXLY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The latest Consumer Price Index report shows that from March 2024 to March 2025, milk prices increased by 2.9% and egg prices climbed over 60% while bread prices stayed stable — at a local Safeway, shoppers paid $3.59 for milk, $6.49 for eggs and $4.79 for bread — totaling $14.87 for these essential items.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washington Department of Transportation has closed the right lane on eastbound I-90 near the State Line interchange from 10 a.m. — noon, causing delays for drivers. Motorists are advised to slow down and watch for work crews.  KXLY

  • Spokane hospitals warn that a bill moving through Olympia will limit reimbursement rates and may lead to longer wait times in emergency rooms and for specialty physicians, affecting many patients on Medicare or Medicaid. Hospital leaders say the tax increases will raise costs and disrupt care — while lawmakers claim the measure will help balance state spending.  KXLY
