  • Today, the historic train depot in Cheney reopens as a coffee shop. The venue retains its original charm — featuring local roasts and community seating for residents.  KXLY
  • Lee Williams, a dedicated member of the Spokane Park Board and volunteer with Friends of Coeur d’Alene Park, is featured as a champion of parks in celebration of Spokane Gives this week. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man was rescued when his boat sank near Ford in 50°F water—Stevens County Fire District No. 1 and National Park Service crews quickly coordinated to get him warm before he was flown to Sacred Heart, and officials said he is expected to make a full recovery.  KHQ

  • A slasher film shot in Spokane and Cheney has been picked up for worldwide distribution by The Horror Collective and will be released in the U.S. this year (set in the 1990s and paying tribute to classic horror films).  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga engineering faculty, students and The Lands Council are using beaver dam analogs (a low-cost, low-risk method) to reduce phosphorus runoff and improve water quality in local streams such as Thompson Creek. This ongoing work gives civil engineering students practical hands-on field experience.  Gonzaga University

  • The City of Spokane conducts its second annual wildfire evacuation drill today in the Latah-Hangman and Eagle Ridge areas — residents will receive phased emergency alerts to practice evacuating with updated guidance for gathering supplies and preparing vehicles.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • A bald eagle with a gunshot wound in the face is recovering at Progressive Animal Welfare Society. The bird arrived in late March (with a misaligned bill from metal fragments near its jaw) and now wears special headgear to correct it.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • FIFA announced that Egypt’s national team will be based in Spokane, which boosts the city’s soccer profile & signals growing local sports momentum. This decision adds to a season of high draft talk and increased local sports enthusiasm.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Jack Kayil declared for the NBA Draft while still planning to join Gonzaga this fall. The six foot five German guard entered his name on Oct. 2 and may participate in the draft combine after his season with Alba Berlin ends.  The Spokesman-Review
