COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers are cleaning downtown Spokane from April 28th to May 2nd to prepare for Bloomsday—the 49th running of the iconic race scheduled for Sunday—with sessions organized from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help local workers and residents join the effort.  KXLY
  • Eighth graders at Cataldo Catholic School and seniors at South Hill Village partnered on Thursday to make blankets for kids in need—Project Linus guides the effort to help children facing serious challenges.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Valley Mayor Pam Haley will declare May 3 as Asian Pacific American Heritage Day at the Spokane Valley Library. The event will include keynote speeches on acupuncture and Qi Gong — along with interactive demonstrations and cultural performances.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane City Council approved $1.25M to improve safety on Maxwell Avenue between Walnut Street and Pettet Drive—new bike lanes, upgraded bus stops, and a more visible crosswalk will help protect local children and families. The funding comes mainly from a state grant with remaining support from arterial street funds.  KXLY
  • The City of Spokane and neighborhood leaders will conduct a wildfire evacuation drill in the Grandview/Thorpe neighborhood on May 3 to help residents practice safe evacuation. The drill will keep its timing secret to mimic a real emergency — it is coordinated with local first responders and emergency management.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Apple Health launched a birth doula benefit in January to make doula care more available to Medicaid recipients and help lower Washington’s maternal death rate of 18 per 100,000 live births last year. The program provides doulas $3,500 per delivery but faces challenges including a limited workforce, regional disparities, and cultural competency & administrative hurdles.  The Spokesman-Review
