EDUCATION NEWS

  • Counseling students at Eastern Washington University gained hands-on insight into crisis response during a recent campus visit from the West Plains Crisis Response Team — a joint effort of Cheney and Airway Heights police — with K9 Tonks playing a unique role.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ecology’s new report shows Washington’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 0.5%—about 500,000 metric tons—from 2021 to 2022. The Climate Commitment Act and Clean Fuel Standard are expected to boost renewable energy investments and yield annual reports, though some experts question the pace.  The Spokesman-Review

  • A 120-year-old statue honoring John Monaghan (a Navy ensign from Chewelah) was removed yesterday morning from its downtown platform after the city council approved hiring a Spokane Valley contractor to move it to Fairmount Memorial Park’s Monaghan Mausoleum.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU completed its 15 practice slate with a Crimson and Gray game, where players showed strong effort on offense and defense. Head coach Kirby Moore said the QB battle – between Pinnick, Eshleman, and Dugger – will extend into fall camp as the team preps for a Sept. 5 road opener.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Ryan Lafferty (32 Division I games) signed Wednesday with the Idaho Vandals, adding a local guard who earned Class 3A Player of the Year honors in 2024 from Mt. Spokane High. Coach Alex Pribble said Lafferty is expected to lead the rebuilt roster on both ends of the court.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Four local gymnasts from Dynamic Gymnastics Academy—Ava Hamilton, Amara Paul, Kinleigh Cook and Ziomara Guidi—qualified to represent their club at Western Nationals in Boise this weekend.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf Department opened three new turf soccer fields at Plante's Ferry Sports Complex today to extend the playing season and give more local youth teams a chance to play + the move meets rising demand for local soccer.  KHQ
