COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Spokane will host the Spokane Skylines zipline at Riverfront Park mid-July; the 1,400-foot ride starts at Place of Truths Plaza behind City Hall, goes under Monroe Street Bridge to Redband Park, and offers a shuttle tour with local history details.  KXLY
  • Family Promise of Spokane and local law firm Lee & Hayes expanded their reciprocal partnership during the final week of Spokane Gives to include volunteer work, donations, and a forthcoming Match Madness Campaign centered on the NCAA tournament that will boost community support.  City of Spokane
  • Spokane Valley City Council approved a land lease with Innovia Foundation for a new dual-sheet ice rink near the Sullivan exit on I-90. Innovia will hold a preconstruction meeting next week to plan an aggressive build-out aimed at completing the facility next summer.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Apr. 30 in Spokane Valley, a homeowner ignited an outdoor fire using a propane torch for yard work that damaged a vinyl fence, home siding and landscaping along South Timberline Drive; firefighters responded in minutes to control the flames.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spokane’s first Egyptian restaurant offering authentic cuisine opened today on Northwest Boulevard ahead of the World Cup, with owner Amir Talb inviting customers and Team Egypt to try his signature feteers (a mix of meat, cheese, and vegetables in crispy pastry).  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The All-American Rejects will perform a free surprise concert tonight at a fan-hosted home at 1928 W 2nd Ave. Fans who RSVP on the band's website will get the location and join the event with a limited (first-come, first-served) audience.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Temple Grandin will speak at Whitworth University on Wednesday, with Spokane events starting at 8 a.m. featuring a screening and a 10:45 a.m. speech with Q&A and book signing. She will also deliver a free talk on autism at WSU Pullman at 6 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Patty Murray condemned a federal appeals court ruling that made it harder for women to get mifepristone — she said the decision followed political motives and dismissed decades of safety data. She vowed to continue fighting to keep the medication accessible.  KXLY
  • Spokane drivers should plan for lane reductions and delays on 3rd Avenue, Washington Street, Market Street and Nevada Street starting Monday, May 4 due to roadway resurfacing and pedestrian safety upgrades — work that will be completed between early and mid-July while local business access remains available.  KHQ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maddie’s Place submitted plans to revamp its South Hill campus (cost $16.4M) at 1004 E. 8th Ave to double capacity for mothers and babies, with construction planned for 2028 and funding from opioid settlements. Developers also proposed Frequency Park near South Regal and two North Ruby townhome buildings.  The Spokesman-Review

  • About 50,000 residents in Spokane will join the 50th Bloomsday race on Sunday; elite wheelchair races start at 8:30 a.m. and most runners begin around 9 a.m. Local TV channels will broadcast the event live from 7 a.m.  The Spokesman-Review
