ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A hazardous ammonia leak was reported at Riverfront Park’s ice ribbon on Friday, May 2 and was contained by Saturday morning when fire crews ventilated the area and used specialized monitoring equipment — the park has fully reopened.  City of Spokane

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Maria Cantwell said there is a strong need for justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People ahead of the National Day of Awareness on May 5 — she backed Savanna’s Act, DOJ outreach, and $6.9 million in funds — while Eastern Washington University will hold a walk and rally from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Legends Casino will host a symposium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jack Tenold, a lifelong Bloomsday participant battling stage 4 lung cancer, plans to walk his 49th race carrying an oxygen concentrator on his back — with family support and scheduled rest stops along the 3-mile course, ensuring he stays safe despite his health challenges.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Jackie Van Allen is a 61-year-old runner who has logged over 63,000 miles and will run in today’s Lilac Bloomsday in Spokane for her 37th time. She plans a 31-mile run next month and a marathon in June as she works to add more marathons to her long career.  The Spokesman-Review
  • University High senior thrower Addy MacArthur changed her shot put technique this winter to overcome a plateau and achieved a 44-2 throw at the Mooberry Relays on Saturday while managing a minor hip strain — she now aims to approach the school record and will return to practice next week.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane fighter Juliana Miller won a unanimous decision over Ivana Petrovic at UFC Fight Night in Des Moines last Saturday—her first fight since labrum surgery and a win that broke a streak of two losses.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Saturday, Washington State signed Oregon State transfer wide receiver Jeremiah Noga, who recorded 23 catches for 266 yards last fall and now has one year of eligibility. The Cougars also added long snapper Colton Peoples to replace a departing player—an effort to strengthen their roster amid several transfer moves.  The Spokesman-Review
