- ➤ Spokane County residents registered on Monday, May 5 for summer swimming lessons at the Northside Family Aquatic Facility in Colbert and the Southside facility on South Hill — the programs offer Parent/Child, Preschool and Learn to Swim classes over five two-week sessions from June through August with morning and evening time options and a sibling discount for extra sign-ups. - ➤ State Route 291 was closed today due to police activity between mileposts 29 and 30 approximately 3 miles east of the SR 231/SR 291 interchange—officials have not provided a detour or an estimated reopening time. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington joined 18 other states in a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—whose planned 25% staff cuts would eliminate key programs such as the sole federal mask approval lab—to challenge actions that Attorney General Nick Brown said break federal rules and endanger public health. - ➤ Spokane City Council voted Monday on the Together Spokane measure that would raise $240 million over 20 years to upgrade parks—officials said the proposal will go to the County Auditor to be included on the November ballot. Officials added that this effort is part of a larger plan that also includes a $200 million bond for Spokane Public Schools. KHQ
- ➤ Road work on Highway 395 between Hatch Road and Hamilton resumed in north Spokane as crews repave surfaces south of Deer Park; the work is scheduled daily from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until Friday—drivers should plan for delays and expect speeds of about 45 mph in the work zones. KHQ

- ➤ The Gonzaga women’s basketball team added 6-foot-2 Taylor Smith from Pocatello and 6-foot Sierra Lichtie from Riverton via the transfer portal to address its need for forward depth after losing Yvonne Ejim and Maud Huijbens. Smith played two seasons at Weber State and Lichtie played three years at Cal Poly—both players are expected to boost the Zags’ lineup. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ On Sunday, Bloomsday held its 49th race in Spokane and 30,050 finishers crossed the Monroe Street Bridge from 32,923 registered runners while 2,096 completed the race virtually. Seventy-one perennial runners participated with 50 finishing in person—and the Lilac Bloomsday Association will form a committee to plan the 50th anniversary race on the first Sunday in May next year. - ➤ Former Mt. Spokane ace Drew Rasmussen — who underwent a major elbow surgery in July — is scheduled to pitch five innings today against the Phillies as part of a cautious plan to protect his arm. Manager Kevin Cash — along with pitching coach Kyle Snyder — said the gradual buildup will help build his endurance while his record remains strong at 1-2 with a 2.64 ERA. The Spokesman-Review
