COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups and SafeKids Spokane will team up for a car seat check-up on May 17 at Spokane Valley Fire Station 3 located at 21300 E. Country Vista Dr. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—certified technicians will inspect car seats for proper fit and safety while offering limited replacement seats for eligible children.  KXLY
  • Spokane’s Catholics gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes on Wednesday to celebrate Cardinal Robert Prevost’s election as Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope in 2,000 years. The new pontiff delivered his initial message of peace which resonated with local church leaders—fostering hope for the future.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane Police arrested Jessie R. Green, 34, on first degree arson charges after a fire ignited Wednesday in the 500 block of East North Avenue, and officials determined the blaze — which damaged a shed, tree and fence — was set intentionally.  KHQ
  • The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Washington charged 21 individuals after a seven-month federal investigation into drug trafficking & violent crime in Spokane and seized more than 14 pounds of methamphetamine, 1 kilogram of heroin, 16,000 fentanyl pills, 5.5 pounds of fentanyl powder and 36 firearms; arraignments are set for today at the Spokane Federal Courthouse.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 4th Annual Asian Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Festival will take place this weekend at Riverfront Park, featuring food trucks, over 120 vendors, live performances, cultural displays, and educational activities. The event will also offer a luau and fire-knife show Saturday from 5 p.m. — 7:30 p.m. along with parenting and community safety resources, and admission is free.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Gonzaga University began upgrading campus learning spaces to support new biomedical research and informatics programs. Demolition work has started at two campus buildings (Bollier Center and Herak Center) and the projects are expected to be finished by the next school year.  Spokane University District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal grants totaling $66,758,406 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will fund terminal upgrades at 12 Washington airports—Spokane International will receive $6.5 million for new gates and passenger areas while Tri-Cities is set to get $7.3 million to update its aging terminal, according to Senator Cantwell.  KHQ
  • Spokane Valley City Council is considering a stricter drug ordinance to protect children from fentanyl exposure+police recommend increasing penalties to a gross misdemeanor after reports of very young children unintentionally ingesting the drug. Council members will revisit the proposal in a future meeting.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • On April 13, a 12-year-old girl in Spokane ended her life by jumping from a hospital parking garage while receiving mental health care—her family and state investigators now question how she was able to leave her monitored room and access the parking area amid concerns over the hospital’s care and the closure of its child psychiatric unit.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Dr. Veena Singh from the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office said fentanyl overdose deaths have risen over 300% in five years, resulting in nearly one death each day mostly in homes. The drug is extremely potent and usually mixed with other substances—officials plan to use opioid settlement funds to expand mental health services and treatment programs.  KXLY
