COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Inmates at Airway Heights Corrections Center raised $4,467.41 for Shriners Children's Hospital by selling 1,466 sandwiches in the first quarter of 2026. Officials said they partnered with Winco to purchase the subs at a discount.  KHQ
  • The 73rd Junior Lilac Parade will start just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday along Washington Street, where 5,000 youth in 60 groups will showcase music, dance, and local talent. Horizon Middle School’s band, organized weeks after spring break, will spotlight the Embrace theme + local pride.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The historic 1914 Saxon roadster — used in a 1916 suffrage drive — is arriving today at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Historic Davenport Hotel, where volunteers and Mayor Lisa Brown will sign a petition urging Congress to recognize the Equal Rights Amendment.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ferris High School debate team qualified for nationals in Washington D.C. and coach Dan Sjolund paid for all 25 flights using his personal card so no student misses out — a fundraiser is set next Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wendy’s on Regal to cover his costs.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gary Verbrugge is pledging his 885-acre property to the Kalispel Tribe with 145 acres already donated and the remainder to follow after his passing; the conservation easement in Scotia Valley prevents development and protects diverse wildlife such as moose and elk.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane announced a highway construction project that will close Meadow Lane Road on the west side starting tomorrow. The closure is expected to last until June 8, and drivers heading to Eagle Ridge are advised to use Cheney-Spokane Road+ Cedar+ Eagle Ridge Boulevard to bypass construction and reduce congestion.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The seventh Active Living Expo will be held in Spokane Valley on May 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center with workshops on health, wellness, and travel for guests 55-plus; tickets are $8 online (plus fees) or $10 at the door.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Regional Health District changed opioid treatment hours at 312 West Eighth — effective tomorrow, the program offers services Monday through Friday from 5:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday medication dispensing from 7:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  KHQ
