COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Services received a $203,000 donation from the Leighton Family Trust on Thursday, May 14 that will expand scholarships and provide adaptive equipment for people with disabilities. The funds will boost program support for recreational activities in our community.  City of Spokane

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lime is asking Spokane to extend its contract so it can boost its scooter fleet to 2,000 today and 2,250 in 2027 — the company also seeks lower winter fees while testing safety alerts on downtown sidewalks.  The Spokesman-Review
  • BoxLunch is hosting a two-day grand opening event this weekend at NorthTown Mall (4750 N. Division St., space 2200). The store opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and the first 50 customers will receive gift cards while it partners with local food banks to fight hunger.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools' cell phone ban and Engage IRL initiative cut lunchtime referrals by 36% and raised student engagement from 29% to nearly 65%. The policy keeps phones out of sight for elementary and middle students while high schoolers may use theirs at designated times.  KHQ
  • Adams Elementary held its groundbreaking ceremony today as the first upgrade approved through the Together Spokane initiative. Officials say more school improvements are planned for the near future.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced improvements to public spaces that enhance safety and accessibility for residents. The plans (including updated lighting and clear pathways) will be implemented in phases across the city.  KXLY
  • City officials announced road closures downtown for the Lilac Festival’s Armed Forces Torchlight Parade and Car Show on Saturday, May 16. Starting at 8 a.m., Spokane Falls Blvd, Wall, Howard and other streets will be closed and reopened by midnight (street parking is prohibited along the parade route).  KHQ
  • The Colville Business Council decided to ban fireworks sales and use on the Colville Indian Reservation this summer to protect Tribal lands and residents, following a drought declaration from the state Department of Ecology.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • In Thursday's Greater Spokane League action, the Central Valley Bears upset University 7-4 with key hits in the sixth inning to set up Saturday's district third-place baseball game against Mt. Spokane; third-seeded Clarkston won 23-12 in a softball semifinal, and top-seeded Greyhounds beat East Valley 2-1 in boys soccer.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Seahawks unveiled their 2026 schedule on Thursday, which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 9 against the Patriots and ends with a rematch against the Rams on Jan. 9-10; the team also finalized preseason matchups and roster changes (adding rookie receivers and waiving two players) ahead of a busy new season.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Indians lost 6-2 to the Hillsboro Hops on Thursday, marking their second straight defeat in the six-game High-A Northwest League series at Hillsboro Hops Ballpark. John West pitched five shutout innings for the Hops and the series resumes today at 6:35 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review
