COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Prana Salon in Spokane Valley, owner Brooke Wells uses Pancake — a pet pig — to help calm kids during sensory haircuts. She said the pig has eased anxiety and is being trained to become a certified therapy animal for future hospital visits.  KHQ
  • Spokane’s 2026 Armed Forces Torchlight Parade will use a route nearly half as long as in past years, marking a major change to the event.  KHQ
  • Spokane master gardeners say today's frost may damage newly planted gardens after a warm week and advise moving potted plants indoors or covering in-ground ones with a sheet (weighted with rocks) for protection tonight.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • The Spokane Tribe reported losing an unknown amount from a bank account on May 12 due to a vishing scam; tribal staff secured the network, alerted its bank & law enforcement is investigating while operations remain unaffected.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • SNL alum Julia Sweeney will serve as grand marshal of the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade later today, leading marching bands + floats and trucks decorated with bank logos from a convertible. The event connects her celebrated career with her Spokane roots.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Spokane County judge ruled that Mead School District is liable for racial discrimination at football camps held at Eastern Washington University where Black players faced racist slurs and hazing. Several families continue legal action as a trial is set for next month (pending further court decisions).  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire Department conducted its swift water rescue training last Friday near Sandifur Bridge when water flowed at nearly 9,000 cubic feet per second (40°F). The team practiced group rescue techniques to better prepare for future water emergencies.  KHQ
  • Spokane County fire and law enforcement agencies practiced mass violence response in Mead on Friday morning. Fire District 9 and the Sheriff's Office led the drill (role players simulated casualties) to standardize emergency actions across the area.  KXLY
  • Spokane Regional Health District will pay $1.65 million to Dr. Bob Lutz (the health officer during the early pandemic) to settle his wrongful termination case ahead of a May 26 trial.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mt. Spokane won the District 6 3A championship as catcher Quincy Schuerman hit a walk off single in the ninth inning, giving the Wildcats a 4 to 3 win over Kennewick. The win sets the team up to advance to state, which begins Thursday at the Regional Athletic Complex.  The Spokesman-Review
