COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the Spokane Parks Foundation will distribute swimsuits collected by the Make a Splash Swim Suit Drive to local kids (supporting families with summer swimwear needs) across Spokane.  KHQ
  • Comma Community Journalism Lab raised $1 million in cash and $1 million in donations, which triggered a $2 million match from the Cowles family. The Spokesman-Review will begin a 90-day makeover into a community-run newspaper that will keep its staff and benefits intact.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane’s 88th Lilac Festival parade drew thousands on a rainy Saturday, featuring over 160 groups, including a Viking ship float from Sons of Norway (a restored fishing vessel) and longtime spectator Lori Carrick, who set up at 5:15 a.m. to mark spring along a shortened route to cut costs.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • The organizers unveiled the Princess Lilac float ahead of the Lilac Festival’s Armed Forces Torchlight Parade today in Spokane — the float, designed last year, was seen for the first time by Lilac Queen Hayden Bowdish as she looked forward to uniting local communities for the event.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student jumper Napela Naihe readies for the NWAC championships starting Monday in Gresham as he builds on improved jump records and a GPA above 3.0. The 19-year-old athlete pursues success in overcoming a heavy favorite in his event.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Washington State University expert David James says locals can spot the Julia orangetip butterfly near streams, meadows & forest edges through early June, as it replaces the previously known Sara orangetip with its bright orange-tipped wings. This new species marks a fresh spring highlight in Eastern Washington.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Valley fire officials say USDA’s new grant conditions have delayed fuel mitigation projects—potentially forcing a year-and-a-half delay that raises wildfire risks for local neighborhoods as guidelines remain unsettled until fall and funding isn’t secured until next spring.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Travelers at Spokane International Airport will face summer changes as crews convert hourly parking into a staging area for a Central Hall project connecting all concourses + new C-East gates open on May 26; walkway realignments will continue until early 2027.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Zags added Spanish forward Izan Almansa on Tuesday to bolster their frontcourt, but guard depth dropped when Jack Kayil opted for the NBA draft, leaving a vacancy. Gonzaga has since pursued transfer options such as Oklahoma State's Vyctorius Miller to fill the guard gap (coaching update).  The Spokesman-Review
  • Bryson Hammer pitched six strong innings as he led the Spokane Indians to a 5 — 2 win over the Hillsboro Hops on Saturday at Hillsboro Hops Ballpark, snapping a skid of three games. Tevin Tucker and Alan Espinal drove key plays while the series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review
  • WSU’s baseball team turned their season around by finishing 27-25 and earning the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament (starting Friday) after overcoming early setbacks. The Cougars’ improved play has restored local pride in the program.  The Spokesman-Review
