COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erin Brockovich spoke to several hundred donors at the Give Like A Woman gala Tuesday night in Spokane, urging the community to protect its water while the event raised over $150,000 for groups serving women and families.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A new park has been announced in Spokane, with plans for community events and ample recreational space. Officials say more information on its location and opening date will be shared soon.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, May 17, firefighters responded to a basement fire on East 33rd Ave that caused minor injuries to a six-year-old boy and an adult man; the fire was controlled in 15 minutes and officials urge families to use the Youth Fire Setting Program for children ages 5 to 12.  City of Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Cocktail Week will run from May 31 through June 7 and feature a Spirits Expo, bar tastings, classes, and special dinners at local venues. Organized by longtime bartender Dakota Goldman and Counter Culture, the event welcomes cocktail enthusiasts aged 21+.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cheney School District broke ground on a new elementary school in Airway Heights today. The project aims to provide modern educational facilities and expand learning opportunities for local students.  KXLY
  • Spokane Public Schools will meet tomorrow night to decide whether to place a levy renewal on the November ballot or in February. The levy, which funds 15% of the district’s budget, would keep the same rate if approved.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County records show several couples received marriage licenses today, including those from Mead + Spokane + Post Falls + Spokane Valley, reflecting the county's ongoing celebration of new unions.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs is leading a trade mission in Tokyo until May 27 to boost business ties in aerospace, agriculture and shellfish while promoting local tabletop game makers (with involvement from the Seahawks and former defensive end Cliff Avril). Meetings include leaders from Mitsubishi, Boeing Japan and Kawasaki.  KHQ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction of the 88-unit Cora Apartments is underway; crews have begun work after hazardous materials removal in January amid three-year planning delays. Built by Avery Construction Group, the complex at 516 W. Cora Ave features four residential buildings & a central clubhouse near Corbin Park and Faith Bible Church.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Shorewood Stormrays defeated the Central Valley baseball team 9-1 at Meridian Park Fields, ending their 303-mile trip and playoff run in state 3A. In state 1A soccer, Medical Lake lost 8-0 to Tonasket while Lakeside fell 6-1 to Wapato (scores as reported).  The Spokesman-Review
