COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, groups will honor veterans with events across Spokane, Post Falls, and Coeur d'Alene, while ceremonies in Medical Lake and Clayton add to the tribute. In Spokane, the Fairmount Memorial Association will host a Heroes’ Breakfast and Flag Cruise at Heritage Funeral and Cremation starting at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, May 26 while other events offer commemorative services—attendees are advised to carpool at Medical Lake due to limited parking.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Three members of a drug trafficking organization linked to a murder convict in Spokane County were sentenced to federal prison on May 20— the longest term was 30 years and their charges included thousands of fentanyl pills and pounds of methamphetamine.  KHQ
  • Zhango Liang, 24, was sentenced to 264 days in prison—after serving 101 days in Skagit County—for his role in a scheme that returned over 140 counterfeit iPads at Target and resulted in $326,000 in losses, and he now faces three years of supervised release while his accomplice Linda You is set for sentencing on June 23.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • After closing for two years from severe water damage in 2023, the Kettle Falls Historical Center near St. Paul’s Mission reopened with renovated exhibits on fur trading, gold mining and Indigenous trade routes—community members and volunteers restored the museum. The center is open today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will operate through Sunday until Sept. 15.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Council Member Lili Navarrete announced she is resigning from District 2—her last day is June 30. She said she is stepping down after 37 years in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood to embrace new challenges.  City of Spokane
  • The City of Spokane will close City Hall, the Waste to Energy facility, public libraries, and other offices for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26—garbage, recycling, and yard waste pick-ups will be delayed the week while Riverfront Park attractions and city golf courses will remain open and splash pads will start on May 23.  City of Spokane
  • Spokane leaders expressed concern over a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the federal government to revoke temporary deportation protections for Venezuelans, a decision that may affect many of the 350 who applied in 2023 & has left families worried about their future.  The Spokesman-Review
