COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Spokane Humane Society will host its 23rd annual Parade of Paws on May 30 at 6607 N. Havana as a fundraising walk for pets awaiting new homes. Families can join the one- to two-mile walk, and organizers will offer music, food, drinks + a vendor fair.  KHQ
  • Spokane Craft Beer Week is underway with over 25 local breweries offering brews as the week-long event runs from May 16 through May 23 — Lilac Brewfest kicked off the festivities.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indigenous Eats has received a $20,000 grant from American Express and Main Street America to expand Native Trivia Nights and other cultural events at its Spokane restaurants (a move to boost native culture and community engagement).  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shadle Park High School held its second adaptive field day today for students with physical or intellectual disabilities, with over 400 students exploring real-world job scenarios. Organizers said the event builds practical skills and community pride.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers and WDFW staff planted over 700 native shrubs on about an acre in Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area near Z-Lake to restore habitat lost in the Whitney Fire of 2022, and they installed fencing (to protect the new growth) that will remain for two years.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters trained yesterday at a historic brick building at 1310 W. Boone in west Spokane without intense heat—its demolition is planned as part of Spokane Transit Authority's expansion of its Fixed Route Operations Center. Construction on the new facility is expected to begin in 2028.  KXLY
  • The State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake will host a public Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 25 at 11 a.m.—military members will place gravesite flags on Friday, May 22, and overflow parking is available on Ritchey Road.  KHQ
  • Washington State Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer held a town hall at Medical Lake City Hall on Wednesday to discuss wildfire resiliency and challenges with homeowners’ coverage following the 2023 Gray fire — Medical Lake leaders said new bills may support transparent risk scores and fund retrofitting projects.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Spokane Zephyr women's soccer team ended its run after two seasons due to dropping attendance and late payments at ONE Spokane Stadium, and officials said they will still work to keep women's soccer active in the area.  The Spokesman-Review
  • At Scottsdale Stadium on Thursday afternoon, top-seeded Gonzaga lost 13-4 to Saint Mary's in the WCC tournament opener after struggling to contain the opposing hitters, & now the Bulldogs must win three consecutive elimination games to claim the title.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga will open against Kansas State on Nov. 24 at T-Mobile Arena in the Players Era Festival as it starts its road to a championship berth. The tournament will include additional games during Thanksgiving week at T-Mobile and Michelob Ultra arenas, with ESPN set to broadcast all contests.  The Spokesman-Review
