COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers placed more than 3,000 American flags on graves at the state veterans cemetery ahead of Memorial Day. They came from Fairchild Air Force Base and the Washington State Fallen Heroes Project (active duty service members also participated) to honor those who served.  KXLY
  • Preschoolers from the Northeast Youth Center honored fallen veterans on Friday morning at Fairmount Memorial Park by placing American flags and pennies on graves for the eighth consecutive year. The tradition teaches respect and ensures veterans are remembered.  KXLY
  • Spokane crews removed the base of the relocated Monaghan statue from downtown—its plaque once described Samoans as savage foe—and city officials said it will likely be moved after Fairmount’s Memorial Day weekend events.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools renamed the Community School to Riverpoint High School after a unanimous board vote on May 20 — the school will move to 501 North Riverpoint Boulevard in 2028.  KHQ
  • Shadle Park HS hosted an adaptive field day on campus to allow students to enjoy modified sports and inclusive activities (designed for various abilities) that celebrated participation for all.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Police and urban Native groups signed an MOU on Thursday, May 21 at 2:05 p.m. to build trust and clear communication by outlining actions like annual forums + prompt notifications for critical incidents that aim to strengthen community safety.  City of Spokane
  • Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff on Monday, May 25 in honor of Memorial Day — a day to remember fallen service members. Citizens with personal flags are encouraged to follow the gesture.  City of Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Spokane Valley, 3-year-old Cora Tacke began a 29-week treatment plan after doctors diagnosed a stage one tumor near her right eye on May 1; community members rallied by raising nearly $37,000 via GoFundMe as she starts chemotherapy and radiation in Seattle.  KXLY

  • Air 4 Adventure (a local provider) will offer whitewater rafting on the Spokane River, inviting locals to enjoy a safe, thrilling experience. More details on scheduling and pricing are expected to be announced soon.  KXLY

  • Mt. Spokane edged Garfield 5-3 on Friday at Regional Sports Complex in Lacey after Addison Jay hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning — the Wildcats will face Stanwood at 10 a.m. today in the semifinals.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Monday, owners Ryan and Katie Harnetiaux announced in the ONE Spokane Stadium locker room that they would end the Zephyr FC women's soccer team due to low community support & financial concerns. Players were left with unanswered questions, and plans to explore a lower-level team are being considered.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Amblessed Okemgbo became Whitworth’s first female national champion in 11 years by winning the discus on Friday at the NCAA Division III finals in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Medical Lake senior threw 47 feet on her third attempt as five Pirates are finishing the meet today.  The Spokesman-Review
