COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Spokane County Fire District 10 will host a community open house on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 929 S. Garfield Road in Airway Heights. The event will feature a Junior Firefighter Combat Challenge, live demonstrations and food—promising a fun day for local families. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners will hold the 13th annual Dad's Day Dash at Manito Park on June 14 to celebrate Father's Day with a family-friendly 5K and one-mile run/walk. Registration costs $32, includes a 2025 t-shirt, and supports more than 30 SNAP programs (helping individuals and families in need). KXLY
- ➤ Over Memorial Day weekend, the Washington State Fallen Heroes Project held its annual Boots on the Ground tribute outside Spokane's Veteran Memorial Arena+ the exhibit displayed boots worn by fallen soldiers with a flag and picture along the Illuminating Courage statue. A flag change ceremony took place Saturday evening+ the tribute will remain open for viewing through Tuesday. KHQ
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Spokane fire crews closed High Drive at South Bernard after responding to multiple spot fires along the bluff—smoke is clearing but several fire trucks remain while the cause is still unknown. KHQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spokane-born U.S. Army Col. Anne McClain will talk with local schoolchildren via a live video call from the International Space Station tomorrow at 10:25 a.m.—she will answer prerecorded questions during a 20-minute event as she continues her six-month research mission. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Orchard Prairie School District students cleaned up the small cemetery on Memorial Day to honor veterans and local pioneers and carefully restored headstones with names from community families. They placed American flags at each grave and scrubbed moss from markers—helping the students learn about their local history while preserving important heritage. The Spokesman-Review
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Spokane Police Department will offer free PAL events for kids ages 8 to 15 throughout July. The program—organized with Spokane Parks Department, the YMCA and other local partners—will feature bowling on July 1 and 3, a graffiti paint-over project on July 8 and 10, games on July 15 and 17, care package assembly on July 22 and 24, and a BBQ with an ice cream truck on July 29 and 31 with registration required. - ➤ In 1952, Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson landed his plane in Spokane on Oct. 15, 1952 to give a 30-minute stump speech from a flatbed truck at Riverside and Monroe while riding in a convertible with Hugh B. Mitchell and Henry Scoop Jackson. He spoke before more than 12,000 people—showing the tight race—and his visit came two weeks after Dwight D. Eisenhower had addressed a smaller crowd at the same spot. The Spokesman-Review
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Bob Faltermeyer donated a kidney to his wife Susan in January after her cancer treatment damaged her kidneys. The transplant—done at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix—saved her life and gave the couple more time together. The Spokesman-Review
